Accidental or Potential Exposure

Responding to an Exposure

A potential exposure may include a splash to the face and/or eyes, cut or puncture with sharps, contact with broken skin, or accidental ingestion. Do the following if exposed:

  • Encourage needlesticks and cuts to bleed; gently wash with soap and water for five minutes
  • Flush splashes to the nose, mouth, or skin with water
  • Flush eyes at the nearest eyewash station with clean water for 15 minutes
  • Call 911 or seek medical attention for all injuries and biological exposures
